At a glance
Midjourney is a candidate for original visual concepts when you can art-direct and inspect the results. Budget for iteration and choose a plan around privacy and generation needs, not a promised output-quality ranking.
Midjourney is worth considering for a creator who needs a visual concept that cannot be captured or sourced conveniently. The buying decision should begin with the asset: an editorial illustration, a background, a fictional scene or a short visual sequence. It should not begin with the largest available plan.
Privacy is a plan decision
Stealth is available on Pro and Mega. Crucially, it does not hide creations posted in public Discord channels. Midjourney's documentation directs privacy-sensitive work toward its web Create page, direct messages or a private server while using Stealth. Stealth documentation.
That distinction matters for an unreleased product or client brief. Buying a privacy feature is only one part of handling confidential material; where you work also matters. Do not upload sensitive assets merely to see whether the tool can improve them. Establish your client's approval and your own handling requirements first.
Current plans
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual payment |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $96 |
| Standard | $30 | $288 |
| Pro | $60 | $576 |
| Mega | $120 | $1,152 |
The official comparison lists annual payment upfront. Standard and higher include Relax image generation; Pro and Mega also include Relax SD video. These are mode-specific allowances, not a promise of unlimited fast output at every setting.
For a short project, compare one month with the full annual commitment. A cheaper monthly equivalent is not a saving if you stop using the tool after the first brief. Conversely, a recurring production need deserves a budget based on observed usage rather than on the lowest advertised figure.
Art-direct a cover, then a sequence
Use an illustrative brief: three chapter illustrations for a fictional story about a lighthouse. The first shows its isolation, the second a storm and the third the return of daylight. Your job is to make the building recognizable across the set while allowing weather and mood to change.
Before generating, write the stable features: a short white tower, red roof, one adjoining cottage and a rocky shore. Then describe the first frame's composition and lighting. Avoid piling several camera positions into one prompt. A distant establishing view and a close-up of a window belong in separate images.
Choose the first image by its ability to support the other two. A dramatic crop hiding most of the lighthouse may look striking but gives you little visible structure to carry forward. Keep the chosen image and a short description of its stable details beside later prompts. Reference and editing controls vary with the selected model; the production requirement stays the same even if the interface changes.
Evaluate the set together. If the tower gains a floor during the storm, that frame fails continuity even if it is individually attractive. First narrow the revision to the building's shape. If repeated attempts cannot preserve it, use the accepted still as the basis of a simpler layout or choose three deliberately different subjects rather than pretending the location is consistent.
For a cover, finish one image with the actual title before committing to the series. The lighthouse must remain legible after the crop, and the sky must leave sufficient contrast for text. Add lettering in your editor. For a video, test a still-image hold and a simple editorial move before buying generation capacity solely to animate a scene that already communicates clearly.
Match the mode to the deadline
The official comparison gives Standard and higher Relax image generation, while Basic relies on its smaller Fast allowance. Pro and Mega add Relax SD video and Stealth. These distinctions affect scheduling and privacy; they do not establish which plan creates better art. Plan comparison.
For an illustrative twelve-asset month, Basic's $10 subscription allocates about $0.83 per accepted asset; Standard's $30 allocates $2.50. Those figures exclude extra time purchases and assume you actually finish twelve assets. They do not predict how many attempts the allowance will support. If you finish only two, the corresponding allocations become $5 and $15.
Use the trial project to record rejected attempts and finishing time. A conventional illustration, licensed photograph or existing asset may cost less overall for an exact brief. Midjourney makes more sense when exploration itself contributes to the work and you can accommodate iteration.
Where it fits in a creator stack
Use it as a candidate source of imagery, then plan the finishing work explicitly. A thumbnail still needs a legible composition; a generated clip still needs its place in an edit. Our thumbnail guide explains that distinction, while AI video generation tools covers the broader shot-generation decision.
Do not pay for overlapping generators indefinitely just because each produces an occasional interesting image. Give each tool the same short brief and record whether it meets the requirements. That is a proposed evaluation method, not a claim that CreatorStack has already conducted the comparison.
Recommendation
Consider Midjourney when art direction and visual exploration are a recurring need. Start with a billing period that matches your immediate project. Treat privacy, approved usage and finishing effort as selection criteria alongside generation access.
Frequently asked questions
Does this review establish commercial rights for my project?
No. Review the current subscription terms and the rights associated with your inputs and intended use. A paid subscription does not establish that every depicted logo, person or protected work is suitable for your brief.
Should I automatically buy the biggest plan for client work?
No. Identify the required privacy settings and expected workload first. Choose the smallest plan that meets those requirements, then assess actual usage before expanding.
Common questions
Questions people ask.
- Which plans include Stealth?
- Pro and Mega. Public Discord channel creations remain visible even when Stealth is enabled.
- Is the annual Basic price a monthly payment?
- No. Basic is $10 on monthly billing or $96 paid annually, equivalent to $8 per month.
- Does unlimited generation mean unlimited finished assets?
- No. Queue mode, model eligibility, review and editing still affect your deliverable.
