At a glance
Google announced Gemini Skills on September 30: reusable instructions you can combine in an existing chat. Current help describes a gradual personal-account rollout for adults with Keep Activity on, with chat skills available without an AI subscription. Start with one writing task and keep Gems that still need unsupported tools.

“Use short sentences. Keep the product names accurate. End with one next step.” If you paste that reminder into every draft, Google’s September 30, 2026 Skills announcement addresses a familiar nuisance: saving instructions once and combining them inside a conversation. We checked the announcement and current help on October 6. Google’s announcement.
The useful change is composability. One set of instructions can describe the writing job while another describes the brand voice. Our interpretation is that smaller, focused instructions should be easier to revise than a single sprawling assistant brief. They still need an output check.
Start with the account that actually has access
Google’s current Gemini Apps help describes a gradual rollout, beginning with personal accounts. It requires age 18 or older and Keep Activity enabled. It says chat skills can be used without a Google AI subscription; work or school access is not yet established by that help page. Workspace has its own rollout, so do not assume the same availability across surfaces. Current requirements.
The same help page documents a mobile saving issue: manually created skills may not save. Its workaround is to create them through a conversation or manually on the web. Skills containing uploaded files currently need the web app for editing when mobile or Mac editing fails. This is a documented limitation, not a bug we reproduced. Creation and editing guidance.
Reuse the voice; review the meaning
For a proposed first experiment, create a short product-description skill. Ask it to preserve supplied specifications, avoid unsupported benefits and finish with a concrete use case. Apply it to two different products, then compare each result with the original facts. We have not run this experiment.
If both drafts sound consistent but one invents a capability, improve the fact-preservation rule before adding more instructions. A reusable style error would simply become easier to repeat. Our practical prompting guide develops this distinction between instructions and evidence.
Google plans to transition personal-account Gems from November 2026, with work and school transitions in 2027. Its migration help currently lists tools that skills do not support, including Canvas, Deep Research, video creation and music creation. Transition details and limits.
Next action: try one recurring text task if Skills appears in your account. Keep an existing Gem until its required tools work in the replacement. The Gemini guide is the next read for the wider app and plan decision.
